Adding infra red remote control facilites to your audio system is easier than you might think!

Based around the LM1983 audio controller chip, this PIC 16C84-based design lets you use an existing 'universal-type' remote control, or its own keypad instead.

Software for the PIC microcontroller was written to decode signals which conform to the RC5 standard used by Philips and others. Installation and compatability notes are included in the article.
